Kids and Families

Welcome!

I’ve set this website up to showcase my most recent work and thoughts img_1652-edit Welcome! on photography.  For specific information about sessions, pricing, and other tidbits, use the “Info” menu at the top of the page. “See More” will take you to other styles of photography I create, from weddings, travel, and snapshots from my own family’s adventures.

For lots of samples and galleries of family and child portraits, just scroll down and see what I’ve been up to. I create portraits of children and families all over Colorado, often working in a family’s home and neighborhood. At least once a year I also create portraits in the Frankfurt, Germany area, when visiting family in Konigstein. If you like what you see, I’d love to come and meet your family. Eric, 303-731-2061. The beauty of a babe

As I look through the 552 images I captured at this infant’s session, I noticed how I often tried to capture movement. It seems odd, looking for the motion with a still camera, but I realized that what I was catching was a visual clue to the life of a boy. When you look at these images, you’re eyes will fill in the rest of the story, the wiggles, the waving hands, the eyes searching around the room for something recognizable.

In my portraiture, I search not for the traditional, the static, the POSE, and often with infants, I don’t worry about the smile. I love seeing the form in an infant’s body, the folds of skin that will soon stretch taught, eyes still a bit too big for a head that will grow quickly, and little fingers and hands that will soon learn to slap high-fives and play patty-cake. When a smile comes, I will be ready, but in the meantime, we’ll capture the many facets of a child’s personality and life.

Benefit Sessions - New Movie

February is a slow month for me. To get out and shoot, I decided to offer benefit sessions…families choose a non-profit they love, donate their session fee to that organization, and I click away. A generous percentage of the portrait order will be donated to a non-profit organization of my choice. This session benefited St. Jude Children’s Hospital.
The thing with portrait sessions in the winter in Denver is trying to avoid the dead grass and empty flowerbeds. That was easy to do by choosing to work at Denver Art Museum, constructed of grey titanium siding: all grey all the time! The weather was warm, the kids were happy, and the location was perfect. Instead of posting a few of my favorites, I decided to post ALL the photos I created…all 1300 of them over the course of an hour and fifteen minutes. Don’t worry, this slideshow moves fast, I fit all those images into about 3 minutes. Be sure to play full screen.

About the movie.
I had a hard time finding the best way to create this…imovie doesn’t let you do short durations for each image, and some of the stop-motion software out there for mac is made more with animation in mind and wouldn’t (or wasn’t easy to figure out how) to have different durations for some of the images. I ended up using good old Final Cut Express. Too about 10 minutes of work once I figured it all out. Music is by Rodrigo y Gabriela.

Portrait Sessions for Infants, Children, and their Parents too

Since 2004, I’ve been creating portraits of children and their parents all over Denver. I bring my equipment to your home, or we meet at a location around town.

If we are working out of your home, I’ll first walk through your home and scout areas of your home that I want to use in our portraits. I love finding furniture, textures, colors, and nooks in your home to use as part of our portraits, so I’ll be looking all over for these. With infants, we often work on the parents’ bed, a warm soft place where everyone has room to cuddle.

I love using parks and the city environment as locations for portraits. For children able to stand up, being out in the city is a great idea for a portrait session. I also am available for travel to the foothills, for some beautiful portraits in the forest.

After your portrait session, where I’ve probably clicked the shutter at least 500 times, I edit your images down to a more manageable 100 -150 images. Those are placed in an online galley where you can view them in large full size versions and start to imagine how they will inhabit your home for many years to come.

For as long as I have been creating portraits, I have also been meeting families at their home for ordering sessions. I bring about 30 of your favorite images as printed proofs to your home, and we sit down at your dining room table to create an order. Meeting in your home allows us to find the perfect place and size of your portraits, and also decide on framing at the same time. Online ordering is also available. A minimum order of $500 is required for a home ordering session.

For complete pricing information, go here.  The best way to view my work is to keep scrolling down.  I’ll post new images from recent portrait sessions every so often.

This is one of my new favorite images…Grandma called me to schedule a portrait session before her grandkids moved to Connecticut:

Lauren: Newborn Infant Portraits

My youngest son is 2 going on 10.  He’s learning how to kick shins and make truck and airplane sounds with his mouth, so when a mom calls me about a newborn portrait session, I jump at the chance to be around little ones again.  We created these portraits right on Mom and Dad’s bed, using natural light and the colors and textures of their decor. Thanks for a great session Lauren (and family!) Here’s a few favorites.

Königstein im Taunus: family portraits in the Frankfurt, Germany area

We’re out in Germany for a few weeks staying with family, and as usual, I brought my camera along. Many thanks to Mary Smith for spreading the word and inviting these wonderful families to a portrait session.

In investigating whether or not to offer portrait sessions in the Taunus towns such as Konigstein, Bad Soden, Oberursel, and Bad Homburg, I searched for local photographers who worked with English-speaking families in the outdoors. I couldn’t find any, so it sounded like a perfect opportunity for me to do what I love to do: capture families in their outdoor surroundings. Many of these families come from the Frankfurt International School community.

Working in towns settled before anyone dreamed of America is such a treat coming from Colorado (with our historical structures being a youthful 150 years old or so), it seemed like everywhere I turned there was a beautiful texture and color to include as part of the portraits.

If you are an English-speaking family, living temporarily or permanently in Hessen or the Frankfurt area, I would love to meet your family for a portrait session. As you can see from these portraits, I try to include the unique environment in your portraits, because I know that it’s important to remember this era in your family’s life. Studio portraits do not retain any essence of where you are, and for expats living abroad, working on the streets and gardens of your hometown is very important to recording this time in your family’s life.

I travel to the Frankfurt, Germany area about once a year, and will be making portrait sessions available again soon. If you are interested, please contact me directly. 001-303-731-2061 (I’m -8 hours from German time, best time to call is your evening time.)

Session Books

Books are my favorite creation. They allow me to tell the story of a family, include so many portraits, and everything is wrapped in delicious leather. Here are the designs for a book I created in Downtown Denver, around Union Station and the Tattered Cover bookstore. These pages were printed 20 inches wide, 10 inches tall, and would have the fold of the page down the center of each image you see in the slideshow.

Some of my Favorites from 2008, part 1

Another great year. Thanks to all the families who allowed me the privilege of capturing your children and families in portraits. This year I worked with many families, and 8 wonderful schools. Thanks to these schools for inviting me to their campuses: the Goddard School in Meridian, Primrose Lone Tree, Primrose Castle Rock, Paddington Station, Summit County Preschool, Denver Cooperative Preschool, Compass Montessori School in Wheat Ridge, and Compass in Golden. Do you love your school portraits? If not, give me a call and find out how I can come to your school next year. Click the play button below to start the slideshow

City Park

I guess it’s my winters growing up in Upstate New York, or perhaps just that I always have to think about the sun when scheduling portrait sessions in Colorado.  To create beautiful portraits, we either need shade to hide from the sun, or need to meet early or late enough in the day that it isn’t super harsh.   Then there are the few days every year when it’s overcast and I can create portraits like this…
