My Photographic Influences and Inspirations

A photographer asked me last week, who are my influences and inspirations. I thought It would be a good idea to think about that and show you the work that inspires me.

Vincent LaForet. Vincent is using the camera I use, the Canon 5d Mark II, to do amazing filmmaking. I’m awed by the transformation that is taking place in visual media this year, and it is driven by the advent of this single camera. I carry around the something close to the quality of 35mm motion picture film, think theater quality, in my camera bag every day. Wow.

Zach Arias. I had the opportunity to work with Zach in a workshop and a few of Denver’s best Photographers, namely Paige Elizabeth, James Christianson, Ross and Kami Bothwell, Bryce Boyer, and a few others whose names escape me. We learned how to light. His work influences how I bring light to your wedding. Until I am holy and divine and radiate light, illumination should never come directly from me or my camera. That’s what I believe. Zach taught me how to make that happen.

David Burnett. David is a renowned photojournalist who has shot everything from the olympics to W. He uses a fascinating combination of a WWII aerial camera lens and a 1950s-era 4×5 (inch film sheets) camera to create images that demand attention. He first caught my eye with images of the Gulf Coast after Katrina, shot on his large format camera. Here’s his website.

Matt Dilyard . Matt has been the College of Wooster’s campus photographer for a long time. He gave me a job, a bunch of film, and a key to the darkroom. That was all I needed to be happy in college. I can manually focus a football game thanks to what I learned with Matt.
